Discover Twelve Apostles
The Twelve Apostles are a group of limestone sea stacks on Victoria’s dramatic southern coast, reached along the Great Ocean Road. They were shaped by long-term erosion of the coastal cliffs, leaving isolated pillars standing offshore in the Southern Ocean.
The photograph captures several of the stacks rising from rough blue water beneath the high coastal cliffs. White surf wraps around their bases and the coastline disappears into the distance, making the exposed scale of this section of coast more important than the number of individual rock formations.
Clifftop viewpoints offer different perspectives as weather and light change across the ocean. Nearby sections of the coast continue the same geological story through arches, gorges, beaches and steep rock faces, so the Twelve Apostles are best understood as part of a much larger coastal landscape.
A Twelve Apostles magnet is a reminder of wind, surf and the immense limestone cliffs of the Great Ocean Road. Adding your visit year can anchor that dramatic coastal view to the day you saw it for yourself.
