The Asaro Mudmen are one of the best-known cultural images associated with Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands. Their performances are recognised by pale body coating, oversized mud masks and an intentionally uncanny appearance that is unlike the brightly coloured dress seen in many other Highland traditions.

This magnet shows three Mudmen against dense vegetation. Their heavy masks have exaggerated faces, while long bamboo extensions create claw-like fingers and the pale coating across their bodies makes them stand out sharply from the dark forest behind them.

Asaro Mudmen performances can be encountered in the Highlands and at larger cultural gatherings where different communities present their own dances, music and ceremonial dress. Seen alongside other traditions, the Mudmen illustrate the extraordinary cultural variety found within Papua New Guinea.
