Deadvlei in Namibia is one of the Namib Desert’s most surreal landscapes, where a white clay pan lies enclosed by some of the world’s highest sand dunes. Ancient dead camel-thorn trees remain standing on the dry surface.

The magnet shows those dark skeletal trees against a huge orange dune and clear blue sky. The extreme contrast between black trunks, pale ground and red sand makes the scene almost graphic in its simplicity.

Walking across the pan reveals how the trees change position against the dunes with every step. Early light often deepens the dune colours and creates long shadows across the clay.
