El Ateneo Grand Splendid in Buenos Aires is a bookshop housed inside a former early-20th-century theatre. Instead of hiding the building’s past, the conversion preserves the balconies, ornate decoration, stage and sweeping auditorium that made the original venue so theatrical.

The magnet looks down into the interior from an upper level. Curved balconies lined with books rise above the main floor, while the red stage curtain and richly decorated ceiling make it immediately clear that this is far more than an ordinary retail space.
