Discover Nugget Point Lighthouse
Nugget Point is one of the most dramatic headlands on the Catlins coast in New Zealand’s South Island. Its lighthouse stands high above the ocean, while a chain of jagged rocky islets offshore gives the point its distinctive name.
The photograph follows the narrow ridge towards the white Nugget Point Lighthouse, with steep cliffs dropping to blue-green water on both sides. Beyond the lighthouse, the scattered rock formations rise from the sea like a broken continuation of the headland.
The short walk to the lighthouse is as important as the building itself, because each section of the track opens a different view of the cliffs and ocean. Wind, changing weather and the possibility of seeing seabirds or marine wildlife add to the sense of being on an exposed edge of the South Island.
A Nugget Point Lighthouse magnet captures that feeling of standing above an open ocean with the rocks extending away below. Adding a date can make the headland a precise reminder of where your journey through the Catlins took you.
